Tempest 2017 Review

Hello All!

Last week our team has ventured into Feakle to take part into a 2 day event: ‘Tempest’ hosted by ISHC (Irish School of Historical Combat) from Galway. On the first day we participated in a 5 hours long Longsword workshop on Meyer Rose taught by Dave Rawlings from London Longsword  Academy and on the second day we had a Longsword Tournament. It was a fantastic event and we all enjoyed it thoroughly on both days! There were some additional attractions in the evening at the Pub but since I wasn’t there i won’t comment on that 🙂 We also had a quick test cutting session on Sunday which was another great add on to what has already been an action packed weekend! Congrats to ISHC for making a great event!

Also, congratulations to the winners of the tournament: Fionntan Murphy from ISHC took Gold, Konrad Drejarski from Sabre Tooth took silver and Brian Moloney from Cork Blademasters who took Bronze! Well done to all!

Here are the tournament videos:

Polish Sabre Seminar this Saturday!

I’d like to officially invite all of you to our Polish Sabre Seminar that will be held on Saturday 30th of Sept 2017 @ Little Island Sports Centre from 11am to 6pm.

This is a rare occasion to learn a weapon that has been  successfully used all over the world for more than three hundred years! You will learn proper body mechanics, grips and cuts as well as specific techniques used mainly in polish style of sabre fighting such as ‘cross-cutting’.

Jerzy Miklaszewski from Silkfencing Team (PL) is a well known expert on Polish Sabre systems and this is his third visit to Ireland teaching sabre as we are now experiencing an increase in popularity  of this beautiful weapon within Irish HEMA.

More details on the event can be found below:

There are still places available for the seminar but registration is closing on Friday so there’s just a few days left to decide! Don’t miss out!

Bolognese Sidesword & Dagger Seminar – Review

Over the last weekend Cork Blademasters had a pleasure of hosting Bolognese Sidesword & Dagger Seminar taught by excellent instructors from Sala D’Arme Achille Marozzo, Italy: Marco Rubboli and Marco Martoni. It was a tough, sweaty workshop but we have learned a lot and at the end of the seminar all participants were able to do some competent sparring in a mini tournament!

Sidesword & Dagger is a very effective system of fencing that can utilize any one handed cut-and-thrust weapon paired with a secondary item (dagger, shield, cloak etc) in order to make a well balanced offence/defence system and I‘m pretty certain it will enhance our skills in other weapons/weapon systems as well. The more you know the better fencer you’ll become which is something I wish to all of you! In the meantime, check out the instructors’ bout below:

For now it’s back to training time but within next 2 weeks we will host another seminar on Polish Sabre as well as launching new 10 Weeks German Longsword Course for the new recruits!

Stay tuned!

Sidesword & Dagger Seminar next weekend!

I’d like officially invite everyone to our Bolognese Sidesword & Dagger Seminar that will take place over next weekend (9-10 Sept 2017)  @ Little Island Sports Centre from 11-5pm on both days.

This is a unique chance to learn Bolognese Fencing System taught by one of the top instructors from Sala D’Arme Achille Marozzo from Italy – Marco Rubboli. This might be a great introduction to HEMA to everyone who would like to try it out as well as for HEMA practitioners who would like to learn Bolognese Fencing.

All equipment will be provided by organizers. Simply register by following on the link below and join us next Saturday:

Féile na Gaiscígh 2016 Review

And we’re back 🙂

Festival of Warriors 2016 – what a great event it was! Fantastic performance from Blademasters: big congratulations to Elliot and Joe for bringing us Silver and Bronze medals from the beginner’s longsword tournament! Well done 🙂 I’ve got one more bronze from the Open Longsword tournament as well so we’re coming back with three medals!

Congratulations to the winners: Peter Smallridge for winning Gold in Open Steel and Keith Farrell for Silver – I had a great fight against Keith and enjoyed that a lot! But apart from longsword there was also women longsword tournament (well done Michela!), beginners nylon longsword, sword and buckler tournament and a rapier one. Congratulations to all medalists!

As usual the organization was top notch: beautiful scenery, perfect accomodation with great food (showers in each room!) for a fraction of a normal price, 5 tournaments, lots of great classes, super friendly atmosphere (it’s Ireland after all :)). Honestly I cannot find a single thing to complain about! Great job Neil!

Classes were brilliant too, I did attend Keith Farrell’s Longsword class on Zwerchau, Ross Bailey’s Messer workshop, Lyell Drummond’s Backsword and Targe class – all of them were really good, very engaging and just pure fun to participate!

Keith’s classes are always great and very educating – he’s one of these teachers that will always show you a new perspective, that there is always a better, more efficient way of doing whatever you try to do. I value that very highly.

Ross’ Messer class was amazing and I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. Well structured, clear and easy to follow with a universal body mechanics that can be applied to any weapon really. I think our vision of Liechtenauer system is pretty much the same so Ross – you have convinced me to start studying Lecküchner 🙂

Last class I did was something entirely new for me – Lyell’s principles of Scottish Broadsword and Targe, great class on body mechanics and a nice introduction to fighting with shield. Very deceptive style of fighting, entirely different from sword and buckler but very very effective. I did enjoyed that immensely!

But of course, there were lots of classes I missed:  Andy Damms’ Pugilism , Gary Nolan’s Meyer dagger and staff workshops, I missed another of Keith’s classes and i missed some of Mike’s excellent rapier stuff as well. It was really an action packed event, not mentioning the evening attractions at the pub 🙂

Great event, I really enjoyed it and looking forward to next year!

I’m uploading videos from open longsword tournament and beginner longsword tournament to our You Tube channel now so check it out in a while, i’ll post them on our Facebook Page too once they’re ready.
