Welcome in 2018!

Happy New Year 2018!

This year Cork Blademasters will offer plenty of activities for everyone!

  • In January we will launch Open Days – free longsword fencing classes for everyone who would like to try out medieval swordfighting! Check it out!
  • Also from January we’ll start our main recruitment event: 10 weeks long German Longsword Courses that will run throughout the year on Mondays 7PM @ Mahon Community Centre!
  • We’ll have new workshops in 2018 for Waterford and Limerick!
  • There’s even more to come: new training classes for our members, Longsword and Sabre Seminars & Workshops, Blademasters Cup 2018 – Open Steel Longsword Tournament and the first leg of the IHFL (Irish Historical Fencing League) as well as many other local and national events (Cork Martial Arts Expo, Cork City Military Show) in which we’ll take part showcasing Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA). Check out our 2018 Event Page for more info!

In the meantime however, i’d like to invite you all to take part in our Meyer Square Diagram Challenge on Facebook (starting on the 2nd of January 2018), it’s a simple cutting exercise that you can do at home with any tool that can simulate an edged weapon and train with us every day for a 30 days of this challenge! It is hard but it’s a great learning experience for everyone who might want to think of starting HEMA in 2018!

Tempest 2017 Review

Hello All!

Last week our team has ventured into Feakle to take part into a 2 day event: ‘Tempest’ hosted by ISHC (Irish School of Historical Combat) from Galway. On the first day we participated in a 5 hours long Longsword workshop on Meyer Rose taught by Dave Rawlings from London Longsword  Academy and on the second day we had a Longsword Tournament. It was a fantastic event and we all enjoyed it thoroughly on both days! There were some additional attractions in the evening at the Pub but since I wasn’t there i won’t comment on that 🙂 We also had a quick test cutting session on Sunday which was another great add on to what has already been an action packed weekend! Congrats to ISHC for making a great event!

Also, congratulations to the winners of the tournament: Fionntan Murphy from ISHC took Gold, Konrad Drejarski from Sabre Tooth took silver and Brian Moloney from Cork Blademasters who took Bronze! Well done to all!

Here are the tournament videos:

Polish Sabre Seminar this Saturday!

I’d like to officially invite all of you to our Polish Sabre Seminar that will be held on Saturday 30th of Sept 2017 @ Little Island Sports Centre from 11am to 6pm.

This is a rare occasion to learn a weapon that has been  successfully used all over the world for more than three hundred years! You will learn proper body mechanics, grips and cuts as well as specific techniques used mainly in polish style of sabre fighting such as ‘cross-cutting’.

Jerzy Miklaszewski from Silkfencing Team (PL) is a well known expert on Polish Sabre systems and this is his third visit to Ireland teaching sabre as we are now experiencing an increase in popularity  of this beautiful weapon within Irish HEMA.

More details on the event can be found below:

Féile na Gaiscígh 2016 Review

And we’re back 🙂

Festival of Warriors 2016 – what a great event it was! Fantastic performance from Blademasters: big congratulations to Elliot and Joe for bringing us Silver and Bronze medals from the beginner’s longsword tournament! Well done 🙂 I’ve got one more bronze from the Open Longsword tournament as well so we’re coming back with three medals!

Congratulations to the winners: Peter Smallridge for winning Gold in Open Steel and Keith Farrell for Silver – I had a great fight against Keith and enjoyed that a lot! But apart from longsword there was also women longsword tournament (well done Michela!), beginners nylon longsword, sword and buckler tournament and a rapier one. Congratulations to all medalists!

As usual the organization was top notch: beautiful scenery, perfect accomodation with great food (showers in each room!) for a fraction of a normal price, 5 tournaments, lots of great classes, super friendly atmosphere (it’s Ireland after all :)). Honestly I cannot find a single thing to complain about! Great job Neil!

Classes were brilliant too, I did attend Keith Farrell’s Longsword class on Zwerchau, Ross Bailey’s Messer workshop, Lyell Drummond’s Backsword and Targe class – all of them were really good, very engaging and just pure fun to participate!

Keith’s classes are always great and very educating – he’s one of these teachers that will always show you a new perspective, that there is always a better, more efficient way of doing whatever you try to do. I value that very highly.

Ross’ Messer class was amazing and I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. Well structured, clear and easy to follow with a universal body mechanics that can be applied to any weapon really. I think our vision of Liechtenauer system is pretty much the same so Ross – you have convinced me to start studying Lecküchner 🙂

Last class I did was something entirely new for me – Lyell’s principles of Scottish Broadsword and Targe, great class on body mechanics and a nice introduction to fighting with shield. Very deceptive style of fighting, entirely different from sword and buckler but very very effective. I did enjoyed that immensely!

But of course, there were lots of classes I missed:  Andy Damms’ Pugilism , Gary Nolan’s Meyer dagger and staff workshops, I missed another of Keith’s classes and i missed some of Mike’s excellent rapier stuff as well. It was really an action packed event, not mentioning the evening attractions at the pub 🙂

Great event, I really enjoyed it and looking forward to next year!

I’m uploading videos from open longsword tournament and beginner longsword tournament to our You Tube channel now so check it out in a while, i’ll post them on our Facebook Page too once they’re ready.

Join us this weekend in Cork!

Bolognese Sidesword Seminar

With great pleasure I’d like to invite you all to join our 2 days Bolognese Sidesword Seminar here in Cork organized in cooperation with Sala d’arme Achille Marozzo from Bologna.

In two days you can learn the world famous Bolognese Fencing System under the eye of 2 head instructors from Italy: Devis Carli and Marco Martoni. We will provide training weapons and 6 hours of fencing in Bolognese style every day! All you need to do is to show up !

And just to let you know, Bolognese Fencing is a true gem amongst the medieval fencing styles, it bridges the gap between medieval and renaissance fencing styles by taking the best of both. It is known also as Dardi School (Bolognese Swordsmanship ) after a fencing master from XIV/XV century but it spans across 3 centuries influencing such great fencing masters as Manciolino, Marozzo and  dall’Agocchie creating italian schol of swordsmanship and influencing all future renaissance fencing styles.

There aren’t many schools practising Bolognese Fencing and certainly none in Ireland so this is a rare occasion for all of us to taste and learn this unique system! Don’t miss this chance!

Dussack Seminar!

Hello All!

With great pleasure I would like invite you all to our Dussack Seminar with guest instructor Jerzy Miklaszewski from Poland!

Jerzy will show us core mechanics of Joachim Meyer dussack system and the way to incorporate them into the other weapons as well. I’m sure you’ll love the seminar – Jerzy is a fantastic instructor famous for his research on Polish Saber but he also plays with Joachim Meyer system (amongst the others).

As promised, we’ll kick off with the seminar and then start to fit dussack classes into our monthly schedule – for now we’ll start once a month, same as Ringen and then we’ll start to increase gradually. Dussack is a great training tool suitable for teaching all curved blade weapon types: sabres, falchions, cutlasses and even messers. This should be very useful practise for us!

For everyone else, join us if you can – i’m sure you won’t be dissapointed with the seminar – we’ll provide weapons for all participants so no excuses! 🙂 Joachim Meyer and his dussacks are waiting for YOU!

Seminar will take place on Saturday 30th of Jan 2016, from 12 till 8PM.
